The wheel of karma turns... |

Yup - the wheel of karma has turned and it is time for the Gods to smile benevolently down on Shaz for a while. I've just won the KZN regional section of the Vodacom Journalist of the Year award in the Online category with co-writer of an article for SciDev.Net, Christina Scott. It was supposed to be a quick 400 word article on the medical council refusing to approve an AIDS trial, and quickly grew into a complicated feature that took two weeks to research ... and just as it was about to go live online the medical council approved the trial. I was sure the story was going to be axed, but it was re-written yet again ... and has got the two of us into the finals in Sandton on November 7, so hold thumbs. Scroll down towards the bottom of the page here.. .
This is the first year that Vodacom has included an Online category, so I have no idea how we stand in terms of expectations - and have no idea who we are up against for the finals, as I've not been able to find the winners mentioned anywhere yet - but do know that we'll be one of five regional winners in the category. If you're curious, the article is here.
It has been interesting to observe how winning - in other words, approval or recognition - makes one feel. I'm obviously no better for the recognition (as it adds nothing to the work already produced) but it does make me feel better about my work - and is an interesting observation of a tendency to not believe in oneself until someone else gives you the nod of approval.
Otherwise - all is well, and growing fast at Hombu. The weeds are growing the fastest, but the T'ai Chi class is coming a close second with eight new and eager students on the floor. My experiment of not charging fees and working on a donation basis is working well for me - and it's nice to feel that everyone has a sense of total freedom within the relationship.
Shaz has a knee niggle which she's largely managing not to aggravate and Bob has a knee injury which he has VERY reluctantly agreed to rest and then rehabilitate. Still missing the presence of our best furry friend ... I miss spoiling her the most.
My ambitious adventure / climate change plans are still in the background, with suggestions mulling in the background. At the moment I am too busy to spend time planning, but should be on top of my work by the end of this month, and Shaz (along with 700 others) has applied to attend a climate change conference in Poland in December.
Should my benevolent karma streak run that long, I'll know by the end of October!!
